I love Douglas Adams. I have all the books, have listened to the BBC radio play, seen the BBC TV series, and seen the movie. (The movie was your basic Hollywood letdown.)

indeed Douglas Adams is amazing. he is my favorite author. i havent heard the radio series yet though i plan to eventually. the BBC series was good and i agree the movie was a big let down. they cast it poorly and changed it too much probably due to the fact that Douglas Adams died before he finished writing the screen play and it was then finished by a combination of like 3 other people

i dont think a planet will be like ours at all

statistically there should be just due to the immense size of the universe it is actually unlikely that there isnt a planet like earth somewhere.

Is there intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe? Most likely.

Have they ever made contact with Earth? Most doubtful.

I hope they're real. We need something of that scale to shake things up.

There are approximately four hundred billion stars in our galaxy. If each of those stars were a grain of salt, this would be enough salt to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Furthermore, it's been estimated that as many as half of those stars may have planets orbiting them. Now, the vast majority of those planets will be uninhabitable, but by the law of averages, there must be a great many that are suitable for life to take root. Everything we know about life on Earth suggests that, anywhere it's possible to scratch out an existence, some form of life will be there. Therefore, it stands to reason that many worlds are as full of life as our own. That being the case, it's not unlikely that we'll find extraterrestrial life some day.

However, I believe that intelligent life will prove to be far more elusive. Consider this: scientists have currently identified more than 1.7 million species of plants, animals, and algae on Earth and it's estimated that over 5.5 million remain undiscovered. (These figures do not include domesticated animals or single celled organisms.) Also, more than 99.9% of all species ever to live on Earth are now extinct. If you do the math, that comes out to well over 7.2 billion species that have ever lived on this planet since it was formed 4.5 billion years ago. Now... in all that time and out of all those species, only one developed intelligence, civilization, and technology: humans. I hesitate to apply this to the rest of the universe, but life on Earth is really all we have to go on. As such, it would suggest that, even if life itself is commonplace, intelligence is quite rare. It's unlikely that there would be more than four advanced civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. In fact, we may be the only one.

That being said, we needn't limit ourselves to our own galaxy. The observable universe stretches some twenty-six billion light-years across and is populated by more than eighty billion galaxies. With those kinds of numbers, we could even expect there to be very many other civilized life-forms out there. Unfortunately, the distance they'd have to travel to visit us borders on the unimaginable. In order for them to reach us, they'd have to be so far beyond our level of technology that they would look at our entire species and likely our entire world as being of no consequence whatsoever; we would be no more interesting to them than a single speck of dust would be to any of us.

The notion of aliens coming to share technology with us is rather absurd; do you go up to an anthill and offer the ants vaccines, computers, or nuclear power? Similarly, a race advanced enough to visit our world would also have little to gain from studying us, so that idea is equally unlikely. It is possible that they could have an interest in our planet's natural resources, but it's just as likely that our world, just like our civilization, would have nothing of value to offer them. In essence, it's unlikely that aliens have ever visited Earth or ever will. If we want to meet them, I believe we'll have to become a galactic or even intergalactic civilization ourselves, at which point we could hope to meet them on roughly equal ground... and that'll be a while.

Edit: correcting numbers.

I do believe in aliens. The possibility for them existing somewhere in this vast universe, is very high. This is not like believing in a fairy tail story. Anyway, if I believe that we will encounter any? I highly doubt that.
