Keep the themes, change the scoring, if all it takes is enough friends to win there's no point to having themes.

That's why there's also the scores from judges.

They don't seem to be helping much if a bunch of people dropped out because of other entree's friends.

If it's about people quitting, it's not the fault of the scoring. Can't say anything can be done to prevent that, unless we forbid quitting but that's too much. Score from judges is 50% of final score, if one got very high from public votes but low from judge's critiques, s/he will barely be able to win.

So say the only people that vote are on the entrees friends list in the next contest Entree A has 20 & they all vote for him, Entree B has 35 & they all voted for her Entree C has 100 & they all voted for him. A & B would have to get near perfect scores from the judges to have any chance of winning. Judge's should have a bit more influence since they are the ones actually examining the pieces & since most people would want to see their friend win. Even if the voters didn't really like any like any of the art the default vote would probably go to their friend just to help him out.

I've never entered one of these so I haven't read all the rules, but does the contest allow campaigning/lobbying? I've never seen a "Vote for my avi" thread so I was guessing it's not allowed, but that was the first thought that came to my mind, even if the entrees don't ask for their friends help.

Campaigning is not allowed, such incident actually happened before. Also, it's highly unlikely that a contestant knows all those who voted. It's like you're saying that the only votes that will be counted in a national election is from a single candidate's home town. And most of the time, I think people will vote for the avatar they think is most deserving...

That was just an example the point was that C had so many more friends that it drastically reduced the chances for A & B, I'm not saying that if people other then their friends voted they wouldn't have a chance to even out the votes, but say your about to vote in the finals but you absolutely hate all of the entrees, but one of them is on your best friend list & you talk to them almost every day wouldn't you vote for them?

That's the reason why there's the judges' scores, so that those who don't stand a chance in the public vote but have creatively done avatars can still win while those who simply copied and pasted an image from the net and used as their avatar can still win even if the judge's scores don't favor them. What you're trying to say here is to completely remove the voting part, which is discouraged because the Avatar Competition should be an event that the whole Anivide community can be involved. Besides, in the poll thread, the names of the contestants aren't even shown (unless they're in the avatars themselves) so unless you're very close to that person, you wouldn't know that it was his/her.

I never said anything about removing voting, I said give the judges more influence over scoring.
Anyone who has enough friends who are willing to vote for them will already have a high score you said it was 50% of their total score. But how often to people get near perfect scores from the judges?
In that example Entree C may very well deserve to win after putting a lot of work into their image where as B just changed the brightness and added their name or something simple that could be done in MS Paint. Entree A could have done something insane, combining mass images making them blend together perfectly, changing colors fixing shadows, shading fading, the works and get that near perfect score from the judges, but if only peoples friends were voting would still lose to the numbers.
The voting thread might not show the names of the entrees, but they are shown in the thread you need to post the images in to enter the contest which is displayed on the home page for what like a week or so? Even after it's taken off there you can still find it in the forums, plus the people have to keep that avi on for the whole month so I'm sure their friends would notice it was the same. You can also see who has voted for who at any time by clicking show voters on the poll, I'm not sure why that's there, but I was guessing it was some sort of anti cheating measure.

I didn't think this would go on for so long, I just wanted to drop my two cents, but I guess that's all it costs for a good debate. =)
