At this point, it is mostly unlikely that the bill in its current state will be passed. Due to the major protests of many websites such as Wikipedia, Google, and Reddit (just to name a few) by having a blackout on their sites have caused more people to be more aware of SOPA and PIPA. We should take in note that Obama has already stated that he is against the bill since it would affect freedom of speech. Also many many co-sponsors and supporters of SOPA and PIPA have already began to back down due to the criticism and negativity on the two corresponding bills.

But lets not forget the main intent of the two bills. The Stop Online Piracy Act is suppose to protect the intellectual property and also protect against counterfeit drugs. The way that SOPA will affect the internet is try to block people accessing sites that have content which you can download illegally. Lets take a torrent site such as Pirate Bay as an example. If sites such as Anivide contain links that foward you to Pirate Bay, SOPA could literally close down Anivide as well as any other sites that has these links as well. This may include Twitter, Facebook, Google, news sites, blogging sites and more. SOPA does not actually close down sites such as Pirate Bay, but just make it more inaccessible.

Lets have another example. Pretend you post yourself playing a music cover on Youtube, the resulting consequences could be that you would end up being sued and also being put into jail. If these Acts were to be passed, it would not just affect the US, but also the entire world. This is due to that the internet is global. It will affect job creations if people want to get started in the internet, the gaming industry and also the movie industry may be affected as well.

But getting to my main point, It is unlikely that it will pass of right now and they are considering revisions to the bills that will not affect freedom of speech and job creation but also combat piracy. There will be a test vote on January 24th to see the consensus.

Also in this case, petitions were not pointless. Since many people were signing petitions and responding to their representatives in congress, it actually overloaded many sites of senators and congress-men

It's my understanding that it hasn't even passed both houses of Congress, yet.

It is just PIPA that will be voted in Senate

Honestly, the copyrighted videos and files that are in megaupload aren't even the majority of megaupload's files. And any such file or video is removed if reported. Why blame $500M+ lost in revenue to Megaupload??

SOPA and PIPA haven't even been passed, what more if they really pass those bills?

Because industry don't know how piracy works and think that if they take away their tools that it will stop, even though they can always make more tools. They are a bunch of f*cking morons.

If you're asking how they'll make it worse, they will make so that companies will be able to immediately DNS block (prevent web addresses from working) without due process. So they can just block sites whenever they want. The Megavideo guys are at least getting a trial. With SOPA and PIPA, they wouldn't even get that.
